Norwegian Olympic Nordic combined gold medallist Håvard Klemetsen has been named head coach of the country's “Team Beijing 2022”.

Klemetsen completed his coaching degree alongside his career as an athlete and announced his retirement from the sport at the age of 38 in April.

The Norwegian was a member of the 4x5 kilometre relay team which won gold at the Sochi 2014 Games in Russia.

His career also saw him win World Championship gold in the same discipline, in 2005 in German resort Oberstdorf.

He won two more silver medals at the Worlds, as well as four bronzes.

Together with fellow former athlete Ole Martin Storlien, the 38-year-old will work with the B-team to develop athletes.

The squad consists of Harald Riiber, Truls Johansen, Lars Ivar Skårset, Espen Bjørnstad, Einar L Oftebro, Simen Tiller and Sindre Ure Søtvik.

Three dedicated training camps are planned for the team through the autumn before the start of the 2017-2018 season.

“It is our goal to create athletes, who are independent and aware, who have good attitudes and who wish to go to war to fulfil their dreams”, Klemetsen says.

“We have been very clear that we will challenge and follow up on each athlete individually with specific focal points.”

During their training, the athletes will work at local centres in Oslo, Lillehammer and Trondheim on a day-to-day basis.

“Our training centres are doing a phenomenal job and a “bottom-up” system is already in place," added Klemetsen, who also made 220 starts on the International Ski Federation World Cup circuit.

"It will be my job to work closely with each athlete of the team but also with their local coaches."
