Japanese mattress company Airweave has pulled out of its sponsorship deal with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC).

According to Sports Business Daily, Airweave ended the deal in April, three years short of its scheduled expiration, but details have only emerged now.

After first signing with USOC during Sochi 2014, Airweave extended the partnership until Tokyo 2020 before last year's Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Terms of the abrupt breakup have not been disclosed.

"Airweave was very supportive of Team USA athletes during their time as a partner," said USOC's senior vice-president of marketing, Mitch Poll, according to Sports Business Daily.

"We thank them and wish them the best moving forward."

The decision makes Airweave the latest to end partnerships with USOC alongside other firms including A-B InBev, Hilton, Citi and TD Ameritrade.

Airweave was one of four companies to drop their sponsorship of American swimmer Ryan Lochte following worldwide criticism of his drunken actions following Rio 2016.

Lochte was among four US swimmers who initially claimed they had been robbed at gunpoint when returning to the Olympic Village, before closed circuit television footage emerged of the men vandalising a petrol station following a night out.

The incident provoked outrage in Brazil.

Swimwear and fashion giants Speedo and Ralph Lauren also left Lochte, as well as Syneron-Candela.

Last year, Tokyo 2020 added Airweave to its growing list of official partners.

It will strive to deliver the most comfortable sleeping environment for the competing athletes, the company claimed.
