Estonian ski jumper Kaarel Nurmsalu has announced his retirement from the sport for a second time.

The 26-year-old has decided to hang up his skis due to undisclosed health problems.

Nurmsalu, who also competed in Nordic combined, initially retired from competitive action in 2014, citing financial reasons.

In January, he announced on his Facebook page that he would be returning to competition with his best results two 30th place finishes at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Jumping World Cup.

These came in Oberstdorf in Germany and South Korea's 2018 Winter Olympic host, Pyeongchang.

"I don't want to go into detail, but when I found out what the health problem was, I made this decision," Nurmsalu said to postimees.ee.

"I already suspected that something was wrong last winter, then we made some tests and it became clear."

Nurmsalu will now work for his sponsor, machinery and equipment rental company Ramirent.

He achieved notable success at junior level, winning the normal hill bronze medal at the FIS Junior World Championships in 2011 on his home hill in Otepää.

At the same event he won two bronzes in Nordic combined, in both the five kilometre and 10km competitions.

The Estonian also competed at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
