The Spanish swimmer produced a strong display in the solo event in the Canary Islands, backing up her excellent performance in yesterday's technical session.

Carbonell completed the event with a total of 182.9702 points, with the 26-year-old holding off the challenge of Anna Voloshyna.

The Ukrainian athlete was forced to settle for the silver medal on 181.6459, while the podium was completed by Hungary's Szofi Kiss, who scored 156.9575.

"Ona is a special swimmer and she is showing her evolution," said Esther Jauma, Spain's coach.

"At the age of 26, she has reached maturity, especially at the artistic level.

"Technically, her improvement is also spectacular.

"She dominates all the facets as a swimmer and we want her to express her maximum in the technical solo and in the free solo."

Carbonell could be on course for further success in the duet competition, after scoring 90.3572 in the technical routine with Paula Ramirez.

Ukraine's Voloshyna and Yelyzaveta Yakhno scored 89.1179 while Iryna Limanouskaya and Veronika Yesipovich of Belarus ended on 82.7732.

The event will conclude tomorrow.

Ukraine ended the day with gold in the free combination team event, achieving a score of 90.6001.

Spain and Kazakhstan rounded off the top three, scoring 89.4668 and 81.2334 respectively.

Japan’s Abe Atsushi and Adachi Yumi topped the preliminary duet mixed technical routine standings, achieving a score of 84.7630.

They hold a 2.2890-point lead over Spain's Berta Ferreras and Pau Ribes, while Germany's Amelie Ebert and Niklas Stoepel are third on 69.0838.

The fifth leg of the inaugural FINA Synchronised Swimming World Series will end tomorrow.
