Olympic champion Khasan Khalmurzaev will lead a strong home team at the International Judo Federation (IJF) Grand Slam starting tomorrow in Ekaterinburg.

A 54-strong Russian team is due to compete at the Palace of Sports.

Khalmurzaev is competing in his first IJF event of the season after easing back into competition at the Sarajevo European Cup last month.

Paris Grand Slam winner Frank De Wit will start as top seed in the same under 81 kilograms competition.

Other leading contenders are expected to be Brazil's world bronze medallist Victor Penalber and Canada's Antoine Valois-Fortier.

Olympic bronze medallist Natalia Kuziutina will be another leading member of the home team in the under 52kg women's event.

Two Brazilians in London 2012 Olympic champion Sarah Menezes and three-time world medallist Erika Miranda are expected to be among her leading opponents.

Competition will take place over two days.

Women will compete in under 48, 52, 57 and 63kg events on day one tomorrow while men will contest under 60, 66 and 73kg divisions.

On Sunday (May 21), men will lock horns in under 81, 90 and 100kg, and over 100kg events.

Women will contest under 70 and 78, and over 78kg divisions.

A total of 122 women and 164 men have entered. 

Brazil's Olympic under 57kg champion Rafaela Silva will be among other leading names in action tomorrow.

The 2013 world champion, seeking her first major victory of the year, was fifth in Paris this year and won silver at the Tbilisi Grand Prix in March.

European Championships bronze medallist Helene Recebeaux and Japan's 2014 world champion Nae Udaka are among other top seeds.
