Simona Halep of Romania and France's Kristina Mladenovic will contest the women's singles final at the Madrid Open after both won their semi-finals today.

Halep, the tournament's reigning champion, eased to a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 straight sets win over Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia at La Caja Mágica in the Women's Tennis Association Premier Mandatory event.

She is now due to face Mladenovic in tomorrow's final after the 23-year-old managed to get the better of Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova this evening.

Mladenovic, ranked 17 in the world, eased into the final with a 6-4, 7-6 straight sets win.

In the men's competition, reigning champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia is set to play Spain's Rafael Nadal for a place in the final.

Djokovic was able to reach the last four without taking to the court after his opponent, Japan's Kei Nishikori, withdrew with a wrist injury before their match.

Nadal, seeded fourth in the Spanish capital, saw off David Goffin of Belgium in his quarter-final 7-6, 6-2 in this ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event.

Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas made it through to the other semi-final.

He came from a set down to beat Alexander Zverev of Germany 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.

Cuevas is scheduled to play Austria's Dominic Thiem in the semi-finals after claiming a straight sets win over Croatia's Borna Coric.

Coric was unable to produce a similar performance to the one which saw him beat world number one Andy Murray of Great Britain yesterday, as Thiem secured a comfortable 6-1, 6-4 success.
