Antonio Bailon of Spain broke the world record as he claimed the trap title at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Shotgun World Cup in Larnaca in Cyprus.

The 33-year-old scored 46 targets out of 50 during the final to break the previous best global mark of 45 set by Italian Simone D'Ambrosio at the opening leg of the season in New Delhi.

Croatia's London 2012 Olympic champion Giovanni Cernogoraz had to make do with silver on 43 hits at the Larnaca Olympic Shooting Range.

Another Olympic gold medallist, Russia's Athens 2004 champion Alexey Alipov, won bronze with 31.

"I am really happy about the outcome of today's competition,” said Bailon.

"The match has been really tough.

"The weather conditions have been challenging here in Cyprus.

"The wind sometimes affected the targets, and the light changed a lot through the day and even during the final.

"But these are the given conditions, it's the same for all of us, and we just have to deal with it.

"Next goal?

"We have an important national match back home in the next weeks, and then of course through today's victory I've qualified for the ISSF World Cup Final in New Delhi.

"I will keep on training and working hard."

The World Cup has now concluded, but tomorrow trap shooters will have the chance to test the new mixed team event which has been proposed by the ISSF for inclusion at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
