German wildcard Laura Siegemund claimed the Porsche Grand Prix title in front of a home crowd after earning a three set win over France's Kristina Mladenovic in Stuttgart.

Siegemund had impressed on her path to the final, earning memorable wins over second seed Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic and Romania’s Simona Halep.

She would continue her fine form with a blistering start against Mladenovic, taking the opening set 6-1 against her French rival.

The second set would prove a completely different prospect, with the momentum swinging in favour of Mladenovic.

The 23-year-old raced into a 4-1 advantage, with two breaks of serve eventually helping her to take the set 6-2 and force a decider.

A tense final set looked to be heading Siegemund's way, with the German earning a break to have the chance to serve for the match.

Mladenovic responded well to the pressure by breaking back, before both players held serve to take the match into a tie break.

It would ultimately prove to be Siegemund’s day, as she eventually sealed a 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 victory.

Siegemund became only the fourth German player to win the clay court event in front of a home crowd in the tournament's 40-year history.

Last year's runner-up joined Anke Huber, Julia Görges and Angelique Kerber as German winners of the tournament, with the latter triumphing in both 2015 and 2016.

Despite suffering defeat, Mladenovic will look back on a superb run to the final, having beaten top seed Kerber, Spain’s Carla Suárez Navarro and three-time champion Maria Sharapova.

Sharapova had been the source of much attention prior to and during the tournament, with the Russian beginning her comeback from a 15-month drugs ban.
