Cyprus' Pavlos Kontides triumphed by the narrowest of margins in the men's laser competition as the Sailing World Cup in Hyères came to an end.

Kontides trailed Italy's Francesco Marrai by six points heading into the double point medal race, but produced a strong performance to pip his rival to gold.

A second place proved enough to secure the gold medal, with Marrai coming across the finish line in fifth position.

Both sailors ended the regatta on 63 points, but Kontides prevailed based on the medal race result.

"It was a battle out there and I was in second or third," said Kontides, who similarly snatched the World Cup Final gold in the medal race back in 2016.

"Francesco managed to pull himself back up to fifth but I knew my current position would give me the win.

"I got overtaken but then got my position back in the downwind and that got me the gold.

"It was close racing."

Australia's Matthew Wearn rounded off the top three, ending 15 points adrift of Kontides and Marrai.

In the women's laser radial competition, Belgium's Evi van Acker secured the overall victory by holding off the challenge of second place Tuula Tenkanen of Finland.

Van Acker would finish 20 points clear of Tenkanen, with France's Mathilde de Kerangat a further six behind in third place.

The men's finn class title was claimed by Alican Kaynar, with the Turkish sailor sealing his first World Cup win by ending 10th in a tactical medal race.

Kaynar would end the regatta eight points in front of The Netherlands' Nicolas Heiner, while France's Jonathan Lobert settled for bronze after ending a further eight points behind.

The women's 470 event was won by Afrodite Zegers and Annaloes van Veen for the second consecutive World Cup.

The Dutch duo, who prevailed in the season opener in Miami, finished the regatta 25 points clear of Spain's Silvia Mas Depares and Patricia Cantero Reina.

Linda Fahrni and Maja Siegenthaler took bronze, as the Swiss pair ended behind the Spaniards in the medal race despite ending on the same score.

Australia's Mat Belcher and Will Ryan had already won the men's 470 class before the medal race, but added further gloss to their week by winning the final competition.

Carl-Fredrik Fock and Marcus Dackhammar of Sweden won silver, while Panagiotis Mantis and Pavlos Kagialis of Greece were the bronze medallists.
