Hosts Australia won the International Swimming Federation (FINA) Water Polo Intercontinental Tournament after defeating the United States 8-6 at the Gold Coast Aquatics Centre.

Luke Pavillard, Johnno Cotterill and Joe Kayes all scored two goals each in a tight final, which saw Australia edge 3-2 in front at the end of the first quarter after the Americans had opened up a 2-0 lead.

There was still only one goal in it heading into the final stanza, with the hosts able to find some daylight to edge home.

James Fannon and Nicholas Brooks also registered for the Australians.

"Tough was an understatement," said Kayes, the Australian captain.

"It was all out war out there today and I was getting smashed - I don't think I kept my head up for very long.

"The boys played really well.

"We knew it would be a totally different game to what we played the other day against the USA.

"Our boys out wide were extremely dangerous which was really nice for me.

"It was an absolute pleasure to captain these boys, the young ones, five on debut, it was good to see every game they picked up a lot and we saw that in today's final."

Australia won every game in the round-robin prior to today's final so completed the tournament undefeated.

Elsewhere today, Japan beat Kazakhstan 12-7 for bronze.

All of the top four have booked their place in the FINA World League Super Final, to be held in Ruza in Russia between June 20 and 25.

New Zealand beat China 5-4 for fifth place.

Hosts Russia, Croatia, Serbia and Italy had already qualified for the Super Final.
