Jade Jones secured a gold in her first competition since December as she won the women’s under 57 kilogram competition at the World Taekwondo Federation’s President’s Cup in Athens.

The Briton battled her way through five contests at the Ano Liosia Olympic Indoor Hall to claim the title, beating Russia’s Ekaterina Kim in the final.

Bronzes went to Yaprak Eris of Azerbaijan and Turkey’s Hatice Kubra Ilgun.

Jones, who won Olympic golds at London 2012 and Rio 2016, has not featured in competition since her World Grand Prix success.

She has since appeared on TV show The Jump, which saw her tackle a series of winter sport events.

“It feels great to be back after a long time off, I did miss it and have really got the hunger back now,” Jones said afterwards.

“I’m really buzzing to get a gold medal in my first competition back.

“I’m getting ready for the Worlds now and have two months to prepare and I really want to tick that last major title off the list”.

In the women’s under-49kg, of Spain took the gold after defeating Britain’s Courtney Eardley in the final while third place went to Russian duo Regina Sakhautdinova and Anatasiia Anokhina.

In the men’s under-58kg, Iran’s Mohammad Kazemi beat Serghei Uscov of Moldova for the title.

Greece’s Georgios Simitsis and Mikhail Artamonov of Russia took home the bronze medals.

There was more Iranian success in the men’s under-63kg as Mirhashem Hosseini won gold.

Britain’s Bradly Sinden came second will the bronzes went to Croatian Lovre Brecic and Belgian Jaouad Achab.

Competition continues tomorrow and is scheduled to go on until Sunday (April 30).
