The first operational venue for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games has been officially opened.

Organisers of the Games, due to take place between April 4 and 15, cut the ribbon at the Volunteer Selection Centre in Burleigh, a suburb of the host city.

Over the next four months, the venue will be where interviews take place for up to 25,000 volunteers wanting to help at the event.

So far, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) have received more than 47,000 applications for volunteer roles.

"Receiving 47,000 volunteer applications was a terrific result, but now the hard part of actually selecting our great team begins," said GOLDOC chairman Peter Beattie.

"For all applicants, it is important to remember this isn't a first come, first served process.

"This is based on merit with all applicants to undertake a range of scenario questioning and one one-on-one interviews."

GOLDOC chief executive Mark Peters added that the volunteers who make it through the selection process will be the face of the Games.

"The enthusiasm of volunteers is infectious," he said.

"They’ll play a key role in shaping the Games experience for athletes, spectators and visitors and promote the Sunshine State to the world.

"Each and everyone has their own unique story and reasons for putting their hand up and I’m looking forward to meeting as many of them as possible ahead of the Games."

After going through the selection process, up to 15,000 volunteers will be given training with TAFE Queensland.
