Rwanda claimed six medals when hosting the African Para Taekwondo Open in Kigali.

It marked a boost for the country as they target the sport's debut at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

Sixteen countries participated in all.

This included, for the first time, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Ethiopia, as well as a special refugee team.

Jean de la Croix Nikwigize led the way for the hosts by winning the K41 under-61 kilograms event.

Consolee Rukundo added a second victory in the K42 under-58kg category.

"It was a great performance," Rwanda Taekwondo Federation secretary general Placide Bagabo told The New Times

"Yes, we expected some medals, but we never thought of winning the whole tournament that comprised some of the world’s strongest nations - like Spain and Morocco - as we were making our first ever appearance."

Nigeria also claimed two gold medals.

Faith Obayzuaye won the K44 female under-58 kg event while Samson Ukpera claimed K42 under-61kg honours.

Countries from outside Africa also participated, with Spain and Uzbekistan finishing second and third respectively in the overall team standings behind the hosts.

Spain won the men's team title in front of Rwanda and France.

Morocco beat the hosts in the corresponding women's event as Serbia finished third.

It marked the second African Para Taekwondo Open after an inaugural edition in Cairo, last May.

Performances at the event will count towards the next World Taekwondo Federation world rankings.
