French ski jumper Ronan Lamy Chappuis is to undergo surgery to remove a benign tumor in his back, the International Ski Federation (FIS) has announced.

The 23-year-old, who was sidelined for most of last season owing to back problems, is due to be operated on early next month.

"Since late December I felt stronger pain in the back and decided to consult a doctor," Chappuis wrote on his Facebook page.

"Medical examinations followed in Grenoble and Lyon.

"In March, a cyst was diagnosed and a biopsy was conducted.

"On April 7, I got the definitive result that it was a benign bone tumor that requires immediate surgery to remove it."

Chappuis' last appearance of the 2016-17 season came at January's Continental Cup in German town Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

He competed in two HS140 events, finishing 39th in the first and 42nd in the second.

The Frenchman's best World Cup results of the campaign were a pair of 40th-place finishes in Norwegian town Lillehammer in December.

That same month, he also registered 49th-place finishes in Swiss village Engelberg and German town Oberstdorf.
