Double Olympic champion Nicola Adams made a successful start to her professional boxing career as she scored a points victory over Argentina's Virginia Carcamo at Manchester Arena.

Fighting on the under card of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) lightweight title contest between Britain's Terry Flanagan and Petr Petrov of Russia, Adams won 40-36 on referee Steve Geary's card.

Carcamo had won four of her seven professional bouts and matched Adams in the opening round.

Adams began to grow into the match and started to land frequent blows which eventually saw her launch a long right hand in the third.

Carcamo was evidently dazed by the shot but managed to hang in, making it to the final bell and forcing the fight to a points decision.

"I absolutely enjoyed every minute of it," Adams told BT Sport.

"You can see a lot more without the headguard.

"I loved it.

"I'm here to stay."

Following Adams' success, promoter Frank Warren confirmed she would be on his card at the First Direct Arena in Leeds, Adams' home town, on May 13.

Adams became the first female boxer to win Olympic gold when she overcame China's Ren Cancan in the flyweight final in front of a home crowd at London 2012.

The boxer then overcame Sarah Ourahmoune of France in the Rio 2016 final, making her the first British boxer since Harry Mallin at Paris 1924 to retain an Olympic title.

Adams ended her amateur career as Britain's most successful ever female boxer after winning the 51 kilogram world title in Astana last year, beating Thailand's Peamwilai Laopeam in the final in Kazakhstan.

The triumph completed a career grand slam, after she previously won European titles, Commonwealth Games gold and the title at the inaugural European Games in Baku in 2015.

WBO world lightweight champion Flanagan retained his title following a unanimous points decision in front of his hometown fans in Manchester.
