Uzbekistan’s Mirzokhid Farmonov denied home favourite Hasan Vanlioglu a gold medal at the International Judo Federation (IJF) Grand Prix in Antalya today after winning the men’s under-73 kilograms final at the expense of his Turkish opponent.

Farmonov, the winner of the 2016 Grand Prix in Tashkent, clinched victory by launching a low sasae-tsuri-komi-ashi for waza-ari after 21 seconds of golden score.

It meant Vanlioglu had to settle for the silver medal,  which was also the case for compatriot Bekir Ozlu in yesterday’s men's under-60kg competition.

Israel's Tohar Butbul and Azerbaijan’s Hidayat Heydarov won the bronze medals at the expense of Slovenia's Rok Draksic and Kosovo's Akil Gjakova respectively.

The other men's category played out today, the under-81kg, saw Russia's Stanislav Semenov beat South Korea's Song Minki to the gold medal.

After both athletes were penalised with a shido for blocking their opponent, three-time Grand Slam bronze medallist Semenov scored what proved to be decisive first waza-ari with a kaeshi-waza technique.

Silver for Song marked his best-ever performance, which before today was a third-place finish at the 2016 Asian Open in Taipei.

Top seed Dagvasuren Nyamsuren of Mongolia overcame Georgia’s Tamazi Kirakozashvili in the first bronze medal match, while Russia’s Murat Khabachirov proved too strong for Argentina’s Emmanuel Lucenti in the second.

There was also action in two women's categories today as Austria’s Kathrin Unterwurzacher won the under-63kg and Slovenia's Anka Pogacnik the under-70kg.

Top seed Unterwurzacher, winner of the Tokyo Grand Slam in 2016 and more recently a bronze medallist in the Tbilisi Grand Prix, defeated Kazakhstan's Marian Urdabayeva in their final.

The 24-year-old countered what turned out to be Urdabayeva's last attack, scoring and continuing with an immobilisation for ippon.

She qualified for the final having claimed a semi-final win over Russia's Valentina Kostenko, who went on to lose the first bronze medal match against Australia's Katharina Haecker.

The second bronze medal match was an all-British encounter with Lubjana Piovesana getting the better of Amy Livesey.

In the women's under-70kg final, Pogacnik defeated Venezuela's Elvismar Rodríguez after launching a ko-soto-gari for a waza-ari in golden score.

Victory earned Pogacnik a third gold medal on the Grand Prix circuit and condemned Rodríguez, who was competing under the IJF flag, to the silver-medal position.

Croatia’s Barbara Matic beat Kazakhstan’s Dilbar Umiraliyeva in the first bronze medal match and was joined on the third step of the podium by Great Britain’s Gemma Howell, who held off Hungary’s Szabina Gercsak in the second.

Action in Antalya is due to conclude tomorrow as the men’s under-90kg, under-100kg and over-100kg categories take centre stage along with the women’s under-78kg and over-78kg divisions.
