The 28-year-old triumphed 11-6, 11-5, 11-8 and will now go on to face England's Emily Whitlock, the 13th seed who defeated France’s Coline Aumard 11-6, 11-8, 11-9.

Third seed Raneem El Welily of Egypt also progressed from the opening stage today, overcoming England’s Jenny Duncalf 13-11, 11-7, 11-5 to set up a clash with the United States’ Olivia Blatchford.

Unseeded Blatchford claimed the shock result of the day after holding off a comeback from 15th seed Donna Urquhart of Australia to win 12-10, 11-9, 9-11, 10-12, 11-8.

Among the other players through to round two are fifth seed Laura Massaro, who beat Egypt’s Mariam Metwally 11-7, 11-7, 11-3, and fellow Englishwoman Alison Waters, an 11-8, 6-11, 11-6, 11-5 victor at the expense of Egypt’s Hana Ramadan.

Massaro will next go up against New Zealand’s Joelle King after the ninth seed defeated Egypt’s Heba El Torky 11-6, 11-7, 11-6.

Waters' second-round opponent is Indian 12th seed Joshna Chinappa, who overcame Japan’s Misaki Kobayashi 13-11, 11-8, 12-10.

The showpiece tournament was initially due to be played in December 2016, but was postponed due to "complications in the negotiations process".

It means this year will witness two Women's World Championships, with the 2017 edition due to take place in English city Manchester between December 9 and 17, alongside the men's event.

There was also first-round action at the men's El Gouna International Squash Open today.

Second seed Karim Abdel Gawad advanced after beating Zahed Mohamed 11-8, 11-9, 11-9 in an all-Egyptian match.

Standing between him and a place in the third round is Spain’s Borja Golan, who defeated Egypt’s Omar Abdel Meguid 11-9, 11-7, 11-8.

Egypt’s Fares Dessouky caused the biggest surprise of the day, overcoming fourth seed Nick Matthew of England 10-12, 11-4, 7-11, 11-5, 11-6.

Awaiting him in round two is Australia’s Ryan Cuskelly, who also beat Egyptian opposition in Mohamed Reda 11-8, 11-3, 11-5.

Peru’s Diego Elias’ reward for pulling off a surprise 11-9, 12-10, 11-8 victory over seventh seed Ali Farag of Egypt is an encounter with Mexico’s Cesar Salazar, who defeated France’s Gregoire Marche 10-12, 11-7, 11-4, 11-9.

Eighth seed Simon Rösner won an all-German clash with Raphael Kandra 11-6, 12-10, 11-8 and will go on to meet Egypt’s Karim Ali Fathi, a 5-11, 12-10, 11-7, 11-9 victor at the expense of India's Saurav Ghosal. 

Round two action in both competitions is scheduled to begin tomorrow.
