Kohli won the men's prize after achieving batting averages of 75 in Tests, 92 in One Day Internationals and 106 in Twenty20 Internationals as he led India to a number of victories on the field during 2016.

His innings of 235 against England during a Test match in Mumbai was described by Almanack editor Lawrence Booth as a sign the 28-year-old was the "spiritual successor to Sachin Tendulkar".

All-rounder Ellyse Perry was awarded the women's title, becoming the second Australian to do so after Meg Lanning won the inaugural prize in 2014.

Perry averaged 81 with the bat in ODIs and now has a total of 17 half centuries in 23 innings since 2014, a record for men and women.

Alongside the leading players, five Cricketers of the Years were also unveiled.

Each year, a quintet of players are selected in the Almanack based on their performances during the English season.

The winners this time round were Pakistan’s Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan and the English trio of Ben Duckett, Toby Roland-Jones and Chris Woakes.

Players can only win one Wisden Cricketer of the Year Award during their career.
