Egypt's world number one Mohamed Elshorbagy reached the third round of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) British Open with a comfortable win at the Airco Arena in Hull today.

The tournament's top seed, who is aiming to win a third British Open title this week, defeated England's Daryl Selby 12-10, 11-4, 11-7 in just 37 minutes to reach the last eight.

“I played the way I love to play, aggressive, hard, patient and varying the shots when I needed to," said Elshorbagy.

"I’m just really happy I did everything I needed to do today.

“Everything went perfectly for me, I’m just really happy, it felt more like me, like the way I used to play.

"I play hard and aggressive, a lot of people misunderstand that and they think that is not a nice way to play the game, but that’s the way I am and the way I play.”

Elshorbagy is joined in the next round by his compatriot and world number eight Ali Farag.

Farag eased past Hong Kong’s Tsz Fung Yip 11-5, 11-1, 11-9.

England's Nick Matthew was also victorious today.

The Delhi 2010 and Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games men's singles champion defeated Simon Rosner of Germany 11-7, 11-5, 5-11, 11-3.

In the women's competition, world number one and defending champion Nour El Sherbini cruised through to the quarter-finals with a comfortable straight games victory over Hong Kong’s Annie Au.

The match lasted just 25 minutes as the Egyptian raced to a 11-4, 11-8, 11-6 success.

She will now face England’s Emily Whitlock, who shocked her compatriot and former world number three Alison Waters 11-4, 11-7, 11-9, in the next round.

“I just didn’t think I would win, I’m pretty chuffed about it,” said Whitlock.

“I’ve beaten Alison once before in practice but it’s never the same, tournament wins are just amazing.

"And winning 3-0 is just a joke as I’ve never won a first round match here – so to win two matches is just a bonus, its been a good week."

The 2013 British Open champion Laura Massaro of England also booked her place in the quarter-finals for an eighth successive year after beating 20-year-old qualifier Mayar Hany of Egypt in straight games.

Hany went into the match full of confidence after eliminating world number 11 Joelle King of New Zealand.

She failed to produce a similar level of performance and fell to a 11-5, 11-1, 11-9 defeat in just 29 minutes.

Second round action is due to continue tomorrow.
