Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States has won the the women's overall International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Skiing World Cup crown after her nearest rival, Slovenia's Ilka Stuhec, pulled out of the slalom race in Aspen today.

Shiffrin arrived in Aspen with a 378 point advantage over Stuhec.

Due to suffering from exhaustion however, Stuhec withdrew from today's slalom handing the crystal globe to Shiffrin with two races remaining.

"It’s beautiful," said Shiffrin.

"I love racing at Aspen and I love racing in front of a home crowd.

"It was a good day.

"No, I don’t know if I’ll ever process [the crystal globe]. 

"It’s been a goal and a dream of mine since I was five years old, and it’s really difficult to understand something that finally happens after 20 years."

The Czech Republic's Petra Vlhova was the fastest in the field today.

The World Championships silver medallist crossed the line in one min 32 sec to narrowly beat Shiffrin, who finished in second place in 1:32.24.

Sweden's Frida Hansdotter completed the podium with her time of 1:32.35.

Austria's Marcel Hirscher proved too fast for the rest of the field as he won the men's giant slalom event

Hirscher has already secured the overall men’s World Cup title, marking the sixth successive time he has achieved the feat.

He continued his fine form today as he crossed the line in 1:49.79.

Narrowly behind in second was Germany's Felix Neureuther in 1:50.32 while Mathieu Faivre completed the podium after crossing the line in 1:50.32.

The World Cup meeting is set to conclude with the women's giant slalom and men's slalom competitions tomorrow.
