Nanjing are poised to be named as host of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships in 2018, with the governing body set to announce the destinations for several major events this weekend.

The Chinese city is the sole candidate for the Championships and their delegation are set to present their bid to BWF Council this weekend in Kuala Lumpur.

It would be the third time China have staged the flagship competition, having hosted the event for the first time in Beijing back in 1987.

More recently, the country welcomed the Championships to Guangzhou in 2013.

The next edition of the event is scheduled to take place in Glasgow’s Emirates Arena from August 21 to 27 this year.

China are also set to earn the right to stage the 2019 Sudirman Cup, the world mixed team badminton championship, with Nanning the only contender.

The 2019 World Championships will also be awarded with two cities vying for hosting rights.

The Swiss city of Basel will seek to fend off the challenge of Tokyo, when both cities present to the BWF Council.

Tokyo will be hoping to stage the competition as a test event for the Olympic Games, which are due to be held in the Japanese city in 2020.

Japan are yet to host the World Championship, whereas Switzerland held the 1995 event in Lausanne.

Thailand’s capital city Bangkok will go head-to-head with Dehli in India for the right to stage next year’s Thomas and Uber Cup Finals.

The events, which are the men’s and women’s team championships respectively, will also be awarded this weekend.

The successful candidates are set to be announced following the bid presentations on Saturday (March 18).
