Oil and gas giants BP have extended their partnership with the Georgian Paralympic Committee (GNPC).

The tie-up will now run through until at least 2020, with the athlete ambassador scheme set to continue.

Both parties made the agreement official at a ceremony at Georgia's Para Sports Development Centre.

BP General Manager in Georgia, Chris Schlueter, was on hand to sign documents alongside GNPC President Shalva Maisuradze.

Three BP Para-athlete ambassadors are currently in operation in the country, including Rio 2016 judo gold medallist Zviad Gogotchuri.

Swimmer Nika Tvauri and wheelchair fencer Irma Khetsuriani are the other two.

They work to promote Paralympic sport in the country, with the focus now Tokyo 2020.

"For the Georgian Paralympic Committee it is very important to be supported by the strong company that is BP in Georgia," said Maisuradze.

"BP was the first official partner of GNPC and we are delighted that we will continue this partnership until 2020.

"This will help the Paralympic Movement develop in Georgia.

"BP’s athlete ambassador programme is equally important and unprecedented.

"We believe this partnership will serve as a role model and other companies will also express a desire to become a partner of the GNPC."

Gogotchuri's gold in the men's under-90 kilograms division was Georgia's only Paralympic medal at Rio 2016.

Schlueter added: "The great energy and success of our world-class Paralympic athletes is an inspiration for me, my colleagues at BP and the Georgian society.

"BP is privileged to be the first official partner of the GNPC since 2011.

"We are happy our partnership has contributed to the development of the Paralympic Movement in the country.

"We continue our partnership with the GNPC and our athlete ambassadors to build on the success Georgia’s Paralympic team achieved on the international arena at the Paralympic Games in Rio."

In September, the International Paralympic Committee extended its own deal with BP until 2020.

The company became a partner of London 2012 and from there began to partner with National Paralympic Committees across the world.
