Bulgarian Stanimir Belomazhev claimed the gold medal in the men's middle distance event at the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) World Ski Orienteering Championships in Krasnoyarsk.

Belomazhev took full advantage of the favourable skiing conditions to power home in a time of 33 min 48sec, 15sec quicker than Erik Rost of Sweden.

The Swedish athlete had to settle for the silver medal as a mistake early on proved costly.

Lars Hol Moholdt of Norway did enough for bronze by clocking 34:54.

Sprint gold medallist Ulrik Nordberg of Norway could not replicate his form from earlier on at the event in Krasnoyarsk, which is due to host the 2019 Winter Universiade.

Belomazhev was able to secure victory despite taking a less than perfect result as he took advantage of a number of disqualifications.

"I just hoped and believed that I could become a world champion," the victorious Bulgarian said.

"I dreamed of this victory, of this moment.

"There is fatigue from the previous days, but it did not prevent me from becoming the winner.

"The emotions were very strong, that after the finish I broke my ski poles."

Rost said he was "satisfied" with the result but admitted he struggled on the technical course.

"Today it was very slippery, the ice was on the track, sometimes I was scared," the Swede said.

"I am satisfied with my result.

"Although, the first race was more successful for me than the second one.

"I hope that at this Championship I will get on the podium again."

The action at the event continues tomorrow with the men's and women's long distance races.
