It was a high quality day of 1,500 metres action in which the two winners had collectively won 16 World Championship medals.

First, teenager Choi Min-jeong produced a tactical masterclass to triumph in the women's competition.

She was content to sit in the middle of the pack in the first half of the race before breaking clear and powering to victory in 2min 29.416sec.

"I wasn't that focused on us coming first and second and more concerned about the skaters from the other countries," the 18-year-old, a seven-time champion in the 2015 and 2016 World Championships, said.

"But it was great that we could get this result together."

Team-mate Shum Suk-hee finished second 0.143 behind and China's Guo Yihan narrowly prevented a South Korean clean sweep, edging Kim Jiyoo for the bronze medal in 2:30.017.

Park, the world 1,000m champion in 2015, was almost as comfortable in the corresponding men's race.

He clocked 2:34.056 with China's Wu Dajing second in 2:34.256. 

Lee Jung-su, also of South Korea, was third in 2:34.356.

Both winners received their gold medals from South Korea's Moon Dae-sung, the Athens 2004 Olympic taekwondo champion and a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes' Commission until last year.

His IOC Commission replacement was former table tennis player Rye Seung Min, another Athens 2004 gold medallist, was also here today.

Short-track is considered the host nation's best hope for medals at next year's Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang.
