Liashenko shot clean on her way to posting a time of 18min 25.0sec to secure her second gold medal of the event in the German resort.

Kononova was forced to settle for silver, while Iryna Bui came through to take bronze. 

Mark Arendz of Canada sealed the men's standing honours as he crossed the line in 18:30.0, reclaiming the world title he last won in 2013.

Arenda, silver medallist at the Sochi 2014 Winter Paralympic Games, finished in front of Ihor Reptyukh of the Ukraine and France’s Benjamin Daviet, who were second and third respectively.

"That was an amazing race," the victorious Canadian said. 

"For the results to be that tight, both of us [me and Ihor Reptyukh] shooting clean – that’s the two titans of this race today.

"It all came down to great skis from the wax techs. 

"For me they were amazing. 

"I just had to push the body and keep skiing as hard as I could.”

Paralympic bronze medallist Oksana Shyshkova of Ukraine stormed to victory in the women's visually impaired race with guide Vitalii Kazakov as she clocked a time of 20:15.7.

The home crowd were left disappointed as Germany’s Clara Klug, guided by Martin Hartl, fell short of the title and earned silver, while bronze went to Ukraine’s Olga Prylutska and guide Volodymyr Ivanov.

The success continued for Ukraine in the men's standing race as Anatolii Kovalevskyi, guided by Oleksandr Mukshyn, topped the podium in 19:55.9.

Belarus’ Vasili Shaptsiaboi and guide Mikhail Lebedzeu did enough for silver, with France’s Anthony Chalencon breaking into the top three in a biathlon race for the first time in his career.

Oksana Masters of the United States, who competed in cycling at last year's Summer Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, took gold in the women's sitting with a time of 20:56.2.

The American did it the hard way as she missed two shots but recovered to cross the line ahead of Germany's Anja Wicker and Belarusian Lidzyia Hrafeyeva, silver and bronze medallists respectively.

Ukraine’s Paralympic silver medallist Maksym Yarovyi added yet another crown to his country's haul by winning the men's sitting in 21:36.1.

Compatriot Taras Rad earned silver and Germany’s Martin Fleig claimed bronze.

The World Para Nordic Skiing Championships in Finsterau conclude tomorrow with action in the middle distance cross-country events.
