Olympic champion Marielle Thompson sealed her fifth International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Cross World Cup win of the season as Canadian team-mate Brady Leman topped the podium for the first time this term in Idre in Sweden today.

Thompson, who won the ski cross gold medal at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games, stormed to victory in the big final, beating Sweden's Sandra Naeslund and Fanny Smith of Switzerland.

Naeslund did enough for second while Smith came through to take third.

The result extended the 24-year-old's lead at the top of the overall standings to 130 points.

Thompson currently has a total of 765 points, while Naeslund is her nearest challenger on 630 and Smith follows on 603.

There was a sombre feel to the competition in Idre as Swedish skier Anna Holmlund remains in a coma following a nasty crash, suffered in December.

"I would give anything for her to be here," French competitor Ophélie David told Swedish station Radiosporten.

"I am not afraid myself, but when I stand on the start, I am happy to be there.

"I want nothing more than to see her come back."

It proved to be a successful day for the Canadian skiers at the event as Leman secured his maiden World Cup victory this season in the men's race.

Leman finished in front of the French duo of Arnaud Bovolenta and Jonas Devouassoux to take an impressive win, which helped him move closer to overall leader Jean-Frederic Chapuis of France.

Chapuis, the reigning Olympic champion, has a total of 759 points, with Leman trailling in second on 616 points.

The FIS Ski Cross World Cup campaign continues in Sunny Valley in Russia from February 24 to 25.
