Slovenia's defending overall champion Peter Prevc topped an International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Jumping World Cup podium for the first time this season but had to share the first step with Poland's Maciej Kot in Sapporo.

Both men scored a total of 260.2 points to ensure two winners at the Japanese hill.

Prevc, who topped qualification yesterday, recorded the longest jump of the day of 143 metres and backed that up with a second effort of 134m.

Kot jumped 139m and 138m as the World Cup ended in a tie.

For Prevc, it will be a welcome return to winning ways after a difficult season following his success last time out.

The Slovenian won 15 events en-route to the overall World Cup crown in 2015-16 but before today had only been on the podium once this term, a bronze at the opening leg in Lahti in Finland in November.

"I'm really happy," said Prevc, who now boasts 22 World Cup wins in all and four in Sapporo.

"It has been quite a long time since my last podium.

"I was not that good in the trial round today, but I knew what I had to do to jump far in the competition.

"In the first round I also had good conditions.

"I hope I can perform that well again tomorrow, just be calm and enjoy jumping."

No silver medal was awarded due to the two winners, with Stefan Kraft of Austria given bronze for his efforts of 137m and 139.

That was enough for a tally of 257.5 points.

For Kot, it was a first victory at World Cup level.

"It feels great to win," he said.

"It's my first win in the World Cup, hopefully it won't be my last.

"It wasn't an easy competition for me, the weather was not that good, but I had two really good jumps.

"I was working very hard to achieve this and it means a lot to me.

"Before my second jump I didn't think about the possible victory.

"I was in similar situations in summer, when I was in the lead after the first round.

"This made it easier for me now.

"I was also in the lead in Klingenthal this season and learned a lot then."

Poland's Kamil Stoch remains as the overall World Cup leader with 1,080 points, despite a mistake today seeing him finish 18th.

Norway's Daniel Andre Tande, seventh today, has 989 with Kraft third on 980.

In the women's competition in Ljubno in Slovenia, Norway's Maren Lundby won for the fourth time this season.

The 22-year-old triumphed in the absence of Japan's Sara Takanashi and Yūki Itō - the only other two jumpers to win a competition this season.

Both opted to rest with Lundby recording jumps of 92.5m and 95m for 256.7 points.

Silver went to Daniela Iraschko-Stolz of Austria after her efforts of 90m and 94.5m gave her a points tally of 251.1.

Katharina Althaus of Germany lept to a third podium finish of the season by recording distances of 89.5m and 92m, enough for 245.6 points.

Lundby has moved up to 889 points in third position on the overall standings.

Takanashi leads on 1,195 with Itō on 928 in second place.

The second competitions will be held in both Sapporo and Ljubno tomorrow.
