The first-ever National Sports Day in Bahrain has been declared a success.

The event in the Gulf country was organised by the Bahrain Olympic Committee in cooperation with national and regional authorities, sporting governing bodies and sports clubs.

People of all ages and nationalities took part across a packed programme, which lasted for a full day.

Sports which were part of the day included table tennis, athletics, mind sports, volleyball, badminton, hockey, horse riding, 3x3 basketball, gymnastics, cycling, weightlifting, mixed martial arts, self-defence, sky diving, tennis, sailing, cricket and football.

There were also activities on offer for those with disabilities. 

Youth and Sports Affairs Minister Hisham bin Mohammed Al Jowder gave the starting signal for a 1.7 kilometre run and "walkathon" - the feature activity of the event.

This began at the Sports Village behind the National Stadium in Riffa.

Top ranking officials who attended the event included Southern Governor, BOC Board member and Organising Committee chairman Shaikh Abdulla bin Rashid Al Khalifa.

BOC general secretary Abdulrahman Askar was also in attendance, alongside another BOC Board member in Women's Sport Committee chair Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa.

Bahrain won their first Olympic gold medal at Rio 2016 in August.

It came courtesy of Kenyan born runner Ruth Jebet, who triumphed in the women's 3,000 metres steeplechase.
