Germany’s Francesco Friedrich secured fourth two-man victory of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) World Cup season in Igls.

Friedrich, along with his brakeman Thorsten Margis, are building towards the defence of their world title later this month and were in fine form in Austria.

The pairing crossed the line in a time of 51.25sec in the first run, giving them a 0.33 advantage over second placed Oskars Melbardis and Janis Strenga of Latvia.

Friedrich and Margis would then seal the victory by clocking 51.67 in the second run, giving them an overall time of 1min 42.92sec.

They would finish with a 0.73 margin of victory over Melbardis and Strenga, who ended as the runners-up.

The home crowd were able to cheer a third place finish for Benjamin Maier and Markus Sammer, with the Austria’s securing a maiden World Cup podium by ending in 1:43.72.

Following the triumph, Friedrich looks poised to secure the overall World Cup title as the German has a 100 point lead over American Steven Holcomb in the standings, having moved onto 1,320 points.

The World Cup season will conclude in March at Pyeongchang, with the event set to act as a test event for next year’s Olympic Games in South Korea.

Friedrich will first look to defend his world title, with Championships due to begin in nine days time at Königssee in Germany.

Elana Meyers Taylor triumphed in the women’s bobsleigh with Lolo Jones, giving her a fourth consecutive victory.

The Americans would end in a time of 1:46.14, with the pair producing the fastest times in both runs of the event.

Canada’s Kaillie Humphries and her brakewoman Melissa Lotholz finished as the runners-up in 1:46.39, while a time of 1:46.53 was enough for the second American team of Jamie Greubel Poser and Aja Evans to complete the podium.

After her second place finish Humphries has a total of 1,446 points to lead the World Cup standings, with Greubel Poser adrift on 1,419.
