Currumbin Beach has been selected as the start and finish line for the cycling road race, time trial and race walk events at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Gold Coast 2018 chairman Peter Beattie claimed the location had been chosen following a rigorous course design process.

The Organising Committee, the City of Gold Coast and other partners will engage with local residents to ensure the best possible plans are put in place for the event.

Australian cyclist Sara Carrigan, Olympic gold medallist at Athens 2004, helped design the road cycling route, with the race due to take place on April 14 next year.

It will take competitors through Currumbin, Currumbin Waters and Elanora, with organisers expecting a "challenging" journey for the riders.

The cycling time trial, scheduled for April 10, will run through Tallebudgera and Currumbin Valley, which are both Gold Coast suburbs.

Race walkers will have to complete 20 loops of the 1km course along Currumbin beachfront, which is set to provide "stunning scenery" for athletes and fans, on April 8.

All three races will be free of charge for spectators.

"These courses have been designed to celebrate Queensland’s keen love of outdoor sport," Beattie said.

"We wanted the reassurance that these courses are absolutely world-class and a considerable amount of work has gone into the design process.

"Importantly, today’s announcement provides local businesses, residents and visitors with 14 months to plan for these free public events.

"Many lucky residents will have a front row seat to these free events and we are working to minimise inconvenience for both residents, businesses and visitors during the lead-up to and during the three competition days."

Gold Coast 2018 chief executive Mark Peters believes the pictures from the three events, which he expects to be beamed to 1.5 billion people, will be "stunning".

"On top of the global television audience, they offer an exceptional opportunity for spectators to get up close to the athletes and showcase the Gold Coast and Queensland to the world through social media," he added.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games are due to run from April 4 to 15.
