Chandigarh in India will be the host venue for the first International Hockey Federation (FIH) Hockey Stars Awards on February 23.

The prizes will be handed out at the five-star Lalit Hotel with awards for best player, goalkeeper, rising star, coaches and umpires in the men’s and women’s games during 2016 being acknowledged.

FIH President Narinder Batra promised the ceremony will be a great chance to raise the profile of the sport.

"These awards are an important opportunity to generate more followers around the globe by raising the profiles of hockey’s athletes, coaches and officials," he said.

"By creating hockey heroes who appeal to all sports fans, not just hockey fanatics, it is hoped that these stars will become household names as hockey’s profile continues to grow.

"This is essential to our strategy’s overarching goal to make hockey a global game that inspires the next generation."

In the women’s prizes, Great Britain’s Alex Danson and Kate Richardson-Walsh are candidates for Player of the Year with Maddie Hinch, a star in the team’s penalty shoot-out win during the final at Rio 2016, shortlisted for Goalkeeper of the Year.

Lily Owsley, the scorer of Britain’s first goal against the Dutch in the final, is among the names bidding for Rising Star of the Year, given to a player aged under-23.
