Yuki Ito saw off the challenge of fellow Japanese jumper Sara Takanashi to secure a maiden International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Jumping victory in Sapporo.

The 22-year-old produced a dominant display in front of a local crowd, with over 3,000 spectators reportedly in attendance.

Jumps of 95 and 96 metres in the two rounds saw Ito end with a winning total of 254.3 points in the competition.

She would end clear of Takanashi, with the Japanese star being denied the 50th victory of her World Cup career by finishing with 242.1 points.

The podium was completed by Norway’s Maren Lundby, as she secured 236.9 points after jumps of 94.5m and 90.5m.

“I am very happy today because it was my first World Cup victory,” said Ito.

“It was very good timing to celebrate it in Japan.

“Before the final jump I was very nervous, my hands where shaking, but I am happy about my jumps today.”

Takanashi, who had won the previous six World Cup competitions, will get another chance for her 50th victory tomorrow.

She currently leads the overall World Cup standings with a tally of 640 points, while Ito second on 452.

The men's World Cup circuit continued in Poland today, with Kamil Stoch triumphing in front of a home crowd in Wisla.

Jumps of 133 and 124m gave him a total of 268 points, which would see Stoch top the leaderboard at the close of the competition.

Austria's Stefan Kraft and Germany's Andreas Wellinger were left trailing in his wake, scoring 251.7 and 249.1 points respectively.

A good day for Stoch became a great one, as it was confirmed afterwards that he had taken the overall World Cup lead by moving onto 733 points.

Domen Prevc is second, with the Slovenian having earned 691 points to date.
