Canada overcame defending champions the United States in overtime to complete the group stage with a 100 per cent record at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Women's Under-18 Championship in Zlin.

The match at the PSG Arena was effectively a dead rubber, with both teams having already earned their place the semi-finals by winning their opening two Group A matches in the Czech Republic.

Both nations have contested every final in the tournament’s history and the match did provide an opportunity to gain a psychological edge in the event the pair both win their semi-final clashes.

Neither team was able to make a breakthrough during the three periods of regulation play, leaving a tense match to be decided by overtime.

The Canadian team would ultimately prevail when their captain Ashton Bell scored the only goal in the additional period to give them a 1-0 win, also ensuring they topped the group.

"It was a great play by my teammates to get the puck free," Bell said afterwards.

"I happened to be there and was thinking shot all the way."

Sweden were beaten 2-1 by Russia in the final Group A match, giving the latter their first win of the competition, ahead of participating in the quarter-finals.

Russia will play the host nation Czech Republic, while Sweden will face the chellnge of Finland.

It followed the Finland and the Czech Republic finishing in the top two positions in Group B.

The hosts knew a victory over Finland in their last match would take them through and they delivered in front of a home crowd, with Magdalena Erbenova scoring in overtime to secure a 3-2 win.

Japan and Switzerland clashed in the late game, with the later achieving a 2-1 victory.

Neither side were able to reach the quarter-final stage of the event before their match, with the two teams now set to contest a best of three series, with the losers suffering relegation.
