The United States maintained their sublime start to their International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Women's Under-18 Championship title defence by cruising past Sweden at the PSG Arena in Zlin this evening.

Sweden were on the receiving end of an emphatic American display as the US ran out 4-0 winners to make it two wins from two matches in the Czech Republic.

Delaney Drake found the net first for the US in the first period.

The Swedes played their best ice hockey of the match in the opening stages of the second, but found themselves two behind when Anneke Linser scored from a rebound.

American captain Cayla Barnes added a third before Natalie Heising completed the rout as she finished off a swift counter attack.

Elsewhere in Group A, last year's silver medallists Canada continued their 100 per cent start as they defeated Russia 4-2, also inside the PSG Arena.

Alexa Vasko opened the scoring for the Canadians just before the end of the first period but Oxana Bratisheva levelled the contest immediately in the second.

The Russians then took a 2-1 lead four minutes later through Alyona Starovoitova.

But 38 seconds later Gabrielle David’s shot was blocked, falling to Audrey-Anne Veillette who hammered home the rebound for Canada.

The Canadians looked more likely to score next and they did through Amy Potomak who made it 3-2 before Brette Pettet secured the win with a fourth.

In Group B, Switzerland secured a nervy shoot-out win over hosts the Czech Republic at the Prerov Arena.

Noemi Ryhner silenced the home crowd early on as she gave the Swiss team the lead, before some scrappy build up saw the puck fall to Lisa Ruedi who made it 2-0.

Aneta Cornova replied for the Czechs after an effort rebounded off her, unknowingly, into the net.

Buoyed by the goal, the supporters were in full voice and they were rewarded with an equaliser soon after when Magdalena Erbenova pounced on a loose puck before firing into the net.

After a scoreless overtime period, the game was decided via the shoot-out.

No-one could convert until the third round when Ruedi added her second goal of the day, which went off the back bar and out so quickly that the goal was not awarded until referee Yana Zueva consulted a linesman and the goal judge.

"We're disappointed with the outcome," said Czech coach Jan Fidrmuc.

"The way we played for two periods, it never should have gone to a shoot-out.

"We made a nice comeback, but unfortunately it didn't lead to a victory."

In the other match in Group B, Finland defeated Japan 2-0.

Group stage action concludes on Tuesday (January 10) when the US face Canada and Russia take on Sweden in Group A.

Group B also concludes with Finland squaring off against the Czech Republic while Japan meet Switzerland.
