Japan’s Sara Takanashi claimed victory on day one of the International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Jumping World Cup event in Oberstdorf today.

The 20-year-old led the overall World Cup standings by 110 points ahead of this week's action but has now extended that lead to 158 following the action in Germany.

She has won three of the previous four events, including two victories at the season opener in Norwegian town Lillehammer and success in the second of two competitions in Russian city Nizhny Tagil.

Takanashi maintained her impressive form today as she produced jumps of 131 metres and 129m to gain a total points score of 283.4 points, which was enough to secure first place.

Russia's Irina Avvakumova took second place while Yuki Ito of Japan completed the top three.

Avvakumova produced efforts of 117.5 and 132 metres which, when combined, gave her a total of 260.5.

Competition is set to continue in Oberstdorf tomorrow, which played host to the first leg of the Four Hills Tournament recently.

Takanashi won the two equivalent competitions here in 2016 on her way to claiming her third overall World Cup crown.

Following the stop in Oberstdorf, action then moves to Takanashi’s home country with competitions in Sapporo on January 14 and 15.
