World Archery President Uğur Erdener has spoken of the potential of the sport in Iran during a visit to the country’s national training centre in Tehran.

Erdener met with Iran Archery Federation counterpart Mohammad Ali Shojaei at the centre, as well as members of the national coaching staff and athletes.

More than 150 archers were training or competing at the venue at the time.

"Iran now has more than 30,000 people participating in archery at all levels - an impressive number that is testament to the positive work of the national federation," said Erdener.

"To see so many young athletes utilising these fantastic facilities in Tehran, and travelling to recent world-class events in Marrakesh and Bangkok (the first and second stages of the 2016-17 Indoor Archery World Cup), speaks to the potential our sport has here."

The two-day trip also saw Erdener speak to Iran’s Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Masoud Soltanifar, and the President of the National Olympic Committee of Iran, Kioumars Hashemi.

Zahra Nemati became the first Iranian woman to win a gold medal at either the Olympic or Paralympic Games when she climbed the women’s individual recurve W1/W2 podium at the 2012 edition of the latter in London.

She made more history last year by securing qualification for both the Rio 2016 Olympics and Paralympics, becoming the first archer to qualify for both Games in the same year since Italian Paola Fantato at Atlanta 1996.

Nehmati was chosen as Iran’s flagbearer for the Opening Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympics, where she suffered elimination from the women’s individual event in the round of 64.

She successfully defended her Paralympic gold medal in September.
