The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has revealed the brand and mascot for the fifth Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat in Turkmenistan next year.

The Ashgabat 2017 brand has been created using a modern take on traditional designs to represent Turkmenistan's journey from the past to the future through health, inspiration and friendship along the Great Silk Road.

Meanwhile, the Ashgabat 2017 mascot is based on the Turkmen national dog, the Alabai.

He is said to be "a fun and endearing character who will help to spread the message of the Games and welcome people of all ages to Turkmenistan".

The Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games is the highest-profile sporting event due to take place in Turkmenistan as the gas-rich nation seeks to boost its profile on the sporting stage.

All 45 Asian National Olympic Committee and 17 from Oceania are due to compete at next year's Games in a special collaboration between the two continents.

Action is due to take place in Ashgabat from September 15 to 24 next year.

Prior to the start of the competition, Ashgabat is also set to host its second OCA General Assembly in three years.

This was announced by OCA President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah at this year's General Assembly in Danang.

A specific date has yet to be confirmed.

But it will take place ahead of or during the Games scheduled to take place in Turkmenistan's capital city.

Ashgabat also played host to the 2015 General Assembly.
