Representatives of the new sports on the programme for Tokyo 2020 are set to become members of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine (NOCU) after the issue was discussed during the organisation’s General Assembly.

The event in Kyiv attracted various sporting officials from the country, including Minister of Sport and Youth Ihor Zhdanov and the Deputy Head of the Youth Politics, Sport and Tourism Parliamentary Committee, Mykola Velychkovych.

Baseball and softball, karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing were all granted places at the Tokyo 2020 Games at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Rio de Janeiro in August.

The NOCU are now likely to grant representatives from the National Federations of the five sports membership of their organisation.

"The Assembly has also discussed and made decisions on rotation in the NOC membership and inclusion of new 2020 Olympic sports representatives based on the decisions made at the recent IOC Session," an NOCU statement read.

A number of other items were on the agenda at the General Assembly in the Ukrainian capital, including the approval of the income and expense report of the first eight months of 2016.

The budget for 2017 was also given the green light by the NOCU’s membership.

Leading executives from the NOCU, including President Sergey Bubka, gave an update on the achievements of the body during 2016, while the Audit Commission also gave a report.

The meeting came at the end of a year which featured the Olympic Games in Rio.

Ukraine returned from the Brazilian city with a haul of 11 medals and finished 31st in the medals table.

Gymnast Oleg Verniaiev claimed the gold medal in the men’s parallel bars event, while Yuriy Cheban won the men’s C-1 2,000 metres canoeing race.
