Defending champion Eric Frenzel led home a second consecutive German podium sweep as he secured his third victory of the International Ski Federation (FIS) Nordic Combined World Cup season in Ramsau am Dachstein in Austria.

The Olympic 10 kilometres/normal hill gold medallist held off the challenge of compatriot Fabian Rießle by 0.8 seconds to finish at the top of the podium.

Frenzel was third after the ski jumping section of the competition as he produced a leap of 93 metres, earning him a score of 125.2 points.

The 28-year-old had to overturn a deficit of 17 seconds to Austria's Mario Seidl, who started first in the cross-country race having topped the ski jumping standings on 129.5 points.

It came after he jumped 97m at a venue which he holds good memories of having repeated the feat in the ski jumping event on his World Cup debut in 2012.

Rießle was not quite able to crown his 26th birthday with a win as he was narrowly pipped by Frenzel.

It quickly became apparent that it would be a straight battle between the two competitors, with German counterpart Vinzenz Geiger coming through to record his maiden World Cup podium result.

Geiger claimed the bronze medal as he crossed the line 23.4 seconds adrift of the victorious Frenzel, who was third in yesterday’s race, where Germany swept the top four positions.

Frenzel’s win saw him close the gap on compatriot Johannes Rydzek, winner of yesterday’s event, at the top of the overall leaderboard.

Rydzek, who finished in sixth today after a poor showing in the ski jumping round saw him languish down in 16th, has 470 points, with Frenzel 16 adrift in second.

Third place on the standings is occupied by Rydzek, who has amassed a total of 342 so far.

The Nordic Combined World Cup series continues with the next event on the calendar in Lahti in Finland from January 7 to 8.
