The Spaniard, who is also President of the International Canoe Federation, was joined by IWGA chief executive Joachim Gossow in Alabama, with the duo meeting members of the Organising Committee.

Chester Wheeler, who is responsible for marketing and media within the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), was also in attendance while a separate meeting was held with Birmingham Mayor William A. Bell.

Bell promised the "full support" of the city for the Games, which are held every four years and feature non-Olympic sports.

Perurena was visiting Birmingham for the first time and was taken on a venue tour.

He was left impressed by what he saw and heard, with the Games five years away.

"There is no doubt Birmingham is a vibrant city and a city of sports," he said. 

"During these days I could see that there is good reason for looking forward to the World Games 2021."

The World Games delegation also visited universities which will be used to house athletes.

One important item on the agenda was how the IWGA flag will be passed to Birmingham during next year's edition of the Games in Wroclaw, Poland.

Birmingham contributed ideas on how they will be involved with the Wroclaw Closing Ceremony on July 30.

"We want so show our southern hospitality and our enthusiasm for hosting this important multi-sports event," said Bell.
