Olympic silver medallist Nia Abdallah is among the six athletes to have secured a spot on the Athlete Advisory Council of USA Taekwondo.

Abdallah, who was second in the under 57 kilograms division at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, was among four sparring athletes and two poomsae competitors to be chosen for a place on the body following the recent election process.

The 32-year-old from Texas has been joined by Logan Gerick, Bernard Posey and LaShondra Rawls as sparring representatives on the Athletes Advisory Council.

Barbara Brand and Ron Southwick were selected as poomsae athletes on the body.

Two of its members - Stephen Lambdin and Sanaz Shahbazi - were elected as representatives from both Olympic and Paralympic taekwondo, to also serve on the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Athlete Advisory Committee.

Lambdin won a bronze medal in the over 80 kilograms division at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara in Mexico.

At the Rio 2016 Olympics in August, he lost his preliminary round contest with home Brazilian athlete Maicon Siqueira.

USA Taekwondo has confirmed two berths on the Athletes Advisory Council remain open following the election – one sparring and one poomsae representative – with procedures for seeking nominations and electing those members due to be released by the governing body in the near future.

Athletes had to submit their Nomination Application and completed a safety background check by October 13.

An online voting process then began the following day and remained open until those selected were announced last month.

Athlete Commissions are seen as a key means by which to get a better representation in sporting bodies.
