Hosts The Netherlands won both of the men's titles available as the International Skating Union (ISU) Speed Skating World Cup leg in Heerenveen concluded today at the Thialf Arena.

Kjeld Nuis backed up his 1,500 metres title from yesterday by adding the 1,000m gold in a time of 1min 08.21sec.

The double success for the six-time World Championship medallist comes despite him suffering from a sore shoulder, which he suffered after crashing into a tree when cycling at a training camp.

This was his third victory over the distance this season and sees him lead the World Cup standings.

Second place went to American Shani Davis who finished in 1:08.57 as Jin-Su Kim of South Korea took bronze in 1:08.63.

In the men's 10,000m, Sochi 2014 Olympic champion Jorrit Bergsma was timed at 12:52.20 to record victory over the longest distance.

He edged team-mate Erik-Jan Kooiman, who was second on 12:57.92, with Ted-Jan Bloemen of Canada third with a time of 13:00.07.

Jorrit's victory was part of a double celebration for his family after wife Heather Bergsma, competing for the United States, won the women's 1,000m competition.

She recorded a third win over the distance this season in 1:14.60 to edge out home skater Marrit Leenstra who managed 1:14.73.

Bronze went to another American as Brittany Bowe stopped the watches at 1:15.03.

In the women's 5,000m, Czech triple Olympic champion Martina Sáblíková topped the pile.

She was timed at 6:57.64 to comfortably finish in front of Germany's silver medallist Claudia Pechstein, who ended with a time of 7:00.82.

There was Dutch bronze as Melissa Wijfje finished in 7:02.51.

The next Speed Skating World Cup will be held in German capital Berlin from January 27.
