Reigning Commonwealth Games champions South Africa were one of four teams who remained unbeaten during the first day of the World Rugby Sevens tournament in Cape Town today.

Fiji, who won gold at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, New Zealand and Scotland also made it through the opening day without losing.

The hosts made it to the last eight with comfortable wins in Group A against Russia, 41-0, and Australia, 29-7, along with a 28-10 victory over the US.

Philip Snyman, captain of the Blitzboks, said they are not allowing their success last weekend and being on home soil disturb their focus.

“It’s been a good week for us,” Snyman said.

“There are a lot of things here in Cape Town that can distract us but, over the last few days, we put last week’s win in Dubai behind us.

“The guys played some nice rugby here today and I think we’ll keep on building.”
