The 2018 World Women’s Curling Championship will be held in North Bay in Canada, the World Curling Federation (WCF) has confirmed.

The tournament will be staged at the North Bay Memorial Gardens in the Ontario city, which will be hosting its debut WCF event, between March 17 and 25.

The venue can seat just over 4,000 fans for ice hockey games when the Ontario Hockey League’s North Bay Battalion are in action.

"It is my pleasure to confirm that we will be taking the Ford World Women’s Curling Championship 2018 into new territory in Canada, with North Bay, Ontario, the host city," said Kate Caithness, President of the WCF.

"Congratulations to the Organising Committee on their successful bid and all the very best as they prepare for this first-class curling event in Ontario.

"I look forward, with much anticipation, to coming here shortly after the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang."

It will be just the second time the tournament has been played in the province of Ontario.

The only previous occasion was in 1996 in Hamilton.

"North Bay is curling country, so I know the 2018 Ford World Women’s Curling Championship is going to do very well; not just with the people in North Bay, but also with the entire northern Ontario region," said Peter Inch, chairman of Curling Canada’s Board of Governors.

"Working collaboratively with our friends at the World Curling Federation, I have every confidence that North Bay’s curling community and its amazing volunteers will put on a spectacular show."

North Bay successfully hosted the 2015 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship at the city's Granite Club.

During the Women's World Championship teams will compete in a round-robin stage, with the top four finishers qualifying for the knock-out rounds.

At this year's edition of the tournament, also held in Canada, Switzerland defeated Japan 9-6 in the final at the Credit Union iPlex in Swift Current in Saskatchewan.

Beijing will host the 2017 World Women's Curling Championships, in what will prove a key marker of the city's winter sporting credentials five years before the Olympic and Paralympic Games are due to be held in the Chinese capital.

The event is due to be played between March 18 and 26.

This will be the first edition of the Women's Championships to take place in China, following the men's version held at Beijing's Capital Indoor Stadium last year.
