Gideon Sam has been re-elected to serve a third term as President of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) during the organisation’s elections at their headquarters in Johannesburg today.

Sam, first appointed to the position in 2008, saw off competition from deputy Hajera Kajee to retain his Presidency.

Kajee, a member of the Board of Directors at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), will remain as deputy to the 67-year-old.

Barry Hendricks managed to unseat Jace Naidoo as vice-president.

Mark Alexander‚ Merrill King‚ Kobus Marais‚ the head of the Sports Association for the Physically Disabled, Les Williams and outgoing Triathlon SA President‚ Debbie Alexander, were elected to the SASCOC board.

SASCOC has not yet revealed the exact breakdown of the amount of votes received by each candidate but have reportedly promised to do so.

Sam will be tasked with leading the SASCOC for the next four years and will be in charge in the build-up to and during the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

He will also be in charge as Durban seeks to remain as host for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

South Africa were warned last month that they face being stripped of the Games if they do not meet a series of conditions they should have already satisfied last year.

Durban were awarded the Games at the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Assembly in Auckland in September 2015 but have so far failed to sign the Host City contract, establish an Organising Committee, confirm the underwriting arrangements as per contractual requirements or make any payments to the CGF.

They have until November 30 to meet the criteria.

CGF vice-president Sam said he was pleased to seal a further term as President but admitted the governing body needed to "restructure" in the near future.

"Well if the members still have confidence in me I'm happy about that," Sam told South African newspaper the Daily Sun.

"I'm comfortable to lead the Committee with their support.

"It is time we take the Federation to the next level."

He added: "I am quite happy that I will be the President again.

"Now it is time to sit down with the board and see what is needed to be done and how that can be done.

“The country should know the good work that SASCOC is doing for the country.

“It is time to restructure."

The elections took place as planned despite two senior legal experts claiming they were "unconstitutional" after as many as 11 candidates were barred from standing before they were hastily reinstated.

Sam’s victory comes after the longstanding official faced fresh allegations of bribery, raised by Norman Arendse, a member of the Executive Committees at Cricket South Africa and the South African Football Association, on the eve of today’s vote.

Arendse has alleged that Sam offered him a kickback if he awarded a tender to a specific company back in 2008.

He claimed he was approached by Sam while he was chairing an Adjudication Committee tasked by the South African Social Security Agency to evaluate bids on a social grant delivery system tender worth ZAR7 billion (£398 million/$496 million/€468 million).

It is alleged that Sam offered the bribe at a meeting with Arendse, claiming he was a representative of Cash Paymaster Services, a company hoping to secure the tender.

Sam has always denied the claims.

A spokesperson for the CGF told insidethegames that the matter had been passed on to the Governance and Integrity Committee, chaired by the organisation’s honorary legal adviser Sandra Osborne of Barbados.
