Chris Mazdzer and Summer Britcher have been named as USA Luge's male and female athletes of the year for 2016.

Two-time Olympian Mazdzer has been honoured after winning two International Luge Federation (FIL) World Cup races during the 2015-16 season, among five podium finishes.

The 28-year-old triumphed in his home events in Lake Placid and Park City on his way to a career best finish of third overall in the World Cup standings.

Twenty-two-year-old Britcher also had a stand-out season, winning three World Cup races in all.

In Park City she won both the regular and sprint events, and she then added the sprint title in Canada's 1988 Winter Olympic host Calgary.

Germany's Tatjana Hüfner was the only other luger to win three World Cup races during the season, with Britcher leading the overall World Cup standings at the mid-season break.

She eventually finished fifth overall which was a career best.

The team of the year prize was awarded to the relay line-up which won gold in Lake Placid.

Consisting of Olympic bronze medallist and world champion Erin Hamlin, Mazdzer and the doubles team of Justin Krewson and Andrew Sherk, the Americans came home in front of Latvia and Russia.

The US are now preparing for the new FIL World Cup season, which begins on November 26 in Winterberg in Germany.

The country will again host events in Lake Placid and Park City, beginning on December 2 and December 16 respectively.
