The Nepal Taekwondo Association (NTA) has honoured World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) President Chungwon Choue for his contribution to the development of the sport in the country.

Daljit Sripaili, the Minister for Youth and Sports, Minister for Irrigation Deepak Giri, Nepal Olympic Committee President Jeevan Ram Shrestha and NTA President Prakash Shumsher Rana welcomed Choue during a programme organised to mark the Diwali and Chhath festivals.

According to NTA President Rana, the association honoured Choue for his contribution to the sport as well as his support to the Nepali association following last year’s devastating earthquake.

The earthquake, which struck in April 2015, left around 9,000 people dead and a further 22,000 injured.

Choue was in Nepal for the second time this year on a personal visit but, during his time there, participated in number of sporting events and also met with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Chief of Army Staff Rajendra Chhetri among other high ranking officials.

He also added that he believes the Nepali taekwondo players have the potential to win Olympic medals in the future.

"Nepali players are capable of winning medals in Asian Games and Olympic Games and the only thing they need do is work and practice hard," Choue said.

"We will have a Olympic Games gold medallist from Nepal in near future."
