The Netherlands retained their European Korfball Championships title on home soil today with a comprehensive win over Belgium in the final at at Sportboulevard in Dordrecht.

Ahead of the competition’s start, the Dutch side were the favourites for the crown and once again they duly delivered before their own fans. 

Before today’s final, the hosts had looked imperious and once again demonstrated their superior quality, breezing to a 27-14 win.

The Netherlands started brightly, leading 10-3 after the first quarter.

Unable to get to grips with their opponents, the Belgians then conceded another four points, scoring just two, to trail 14-5 at half time.

The two top scorers of the tournament on 28 points each, Jesse De Bremaeker and Nick Janssens, both played for Belgium but were unable to turn their team’s fortunes around.

As the game wore on, the Dutch team increased their lead to 23-10 after quarter three before adding four points in the final leg of the match to go on and secure the European crown for a second consecutive time.

Catalonia claimed the tournament’s bronze medal as they overcame Portugal 16-12 in a thrilling match.

It was difficult to separate the sides throughout the contest with the Catalonians leading 5-2 at the end of the first quarter before their opponents rallied back to take a 6-5 advantage into half time.

Once again, however, neither side could take control of the game as they were level at 10-10 going into the fourth and decisive quarter.

Three scores from Catalonia’s Jose Luis Jurado and solo strikes by Berta Aloma, Jose Alvarez and Laia Rosa nudged them into the lead which they managed to defend to secure take third place.
