Patrick Chan will hope to delight the home crowd by winning a sixth Skate Canada International gold medal when the event at the Hershey’s Centre in Toronto gets underway tomorrow.

The annual competition, which will be attended by the world’s top figure skaters, forms part of the International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix of Figure Skating season.

The 2016 edition of the Skate Canada International is due to conclude on Sunday (October 3).

It is the second of six competitions on this year's Grand Prix of Figure Skating circuit, with the Grand Final scheduled for December 8 to 11 in Marseille in France.

Chan, a three-time world champion and twice an Olympic silver medallist, is one of the headline names in the men’s competition and will be one of 11 Canadian representatives at the event.

He will be joined by fellow Olympic silver medallist Kevin Reynolds, a member of the Canadian team which finished second at Sochi 2014.

They will both be bidding to capitalise on the absence of Japan's Shoma Uno, who won the men’s competition during the opening Grand Prix of Figure Skating leg in Chicago last weekend.

Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan is among the field, however, representing a strong test for the Canadian entrants.

Kaetlyn Osmond, who was also part of the Canadian team which sealed Olympic silver at the Games in the Russian city, will be one to watch in the women’s event.

Two-time world champions and Olympic silver medallists Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford will be the main hopes for the host nation in the pairs competition.

Competitors will be aiming to accumulate enough points to qualify for the Grand Prix final and win prize money of $180,000 (£147,000/€165,000) per individual event.

Points towards the Grand Prix final are awarded to the top eight competitors in each category, with 15 points going to first place, 13 to second and 11 to third.
