The World Squash Federation (WSF) has announced that the 2017 World Doubles Championships will be held in Manchester.

The English city will host the event at the National Squash Centre following an agreement between the WSF and England Squash.

Manchester will host the event for the first time between August 1 and 5 next year, with the city also staging the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Championships in December 2017.

Men's, women's and mixed competitions will all be part of the programme.

The event will be the fifth edition of the World Doubles Championships and will give players ideal preparation for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.

The discipline will also feature at the next Pan American Games, in Peru's capital Lima in 2019.

"Doubles on a wider court with a lower tin has proved itself to be fast-paced and exciting," said WSF President N Ramachandran.

"It has been a great success in the Commonwealth and Pan-Am Games as well as at our own WSF World Doubles earlier this year, and naturally we are very pleased that next year it will be in the strong hands of England to host.

"We are sure that the visiting teams will enjoy a hugely successful event, which so many will use as preparation for the next Games."

This year's World Doubles Championships was hosted by Australia in Darwin.

"We are thrilled and honoured to have the opportunity to host the World Doubles Championships for the very first time," said England Squash's chief executive Keir Worth.

"We have a strong track record of delivering a number of World Championships in England and this is a golden opportunity to showcase our wonderful sport ahead of the men's and women's World Championships in December 2017."
